Turkey are through to the semi-finals of the UEFA European Championship for the first time at Croatia’s expense after a thrilling match in Vienna was decided on penalties after the two sides had swapped goals in the final moments of extra time.

Sensational comeback
When Ivan Klasnić headed in Luka Modrić’s cross with a minute of the overtime period to play, Croatia looked to have booked their place in Wednesday’s semi-final against Germany. However, for the third game running, Turkey sensationally hit back at the death to force the first shoot-out of these finals when Semih Şentürk drove in, with the aid of a deflection, from just inside the area. They went on to win 3-1 on penalties after Rüştü Reçber saved Mladen Petrić’s kick following earlier misses from Modrić and Ivan Rakitić. Turkey coach Fatih Terim, though, will struggle to get a team together to play Germany with Emre Aşık, Tuncay Şanlı and Arda Turan all suspended along with Volkan Demirel after being booked here.

Nervy start
Terim, without the banned Volkan Demirel and Mehmet Aurélio and with injuries also taking their toll, made four changes from the side that defeated the Czech Republic dramatically to reach the quarter-finals. The 35-year-old Rüştü, who had played against Croatia coach Slaven Bilić at EURO ‘96™, started in goal, while Bilić reverted to the team that had beaten Germany en route to topping Group B. With so much at stake, both sets of players made nervy starts. On five minutes Turkey right-back Sabri Sarıoğlu’s misplaced pass allowed Rakitić to dart to the byline and he pulled the ball back for Darijo Srna whose shot was blocked by Hakan Balta. It was a portent of things to come as Croatia probed with success down both flanks with Terim’s reshuffled back line struggling to cope with their slick passing.

Olić denied
For Turkey, Hamit Altıntop flashed an early effort wide and Robert Kovač bravely blocked his free-kick, but Bilić’s men were soon in the ascendancy and should have gone ahead on 18 minutes. Croatia fans had descended on Vienna en masse during a baking hot day and they roared as one when Modrić raced clear on the right. His low centre singled out Ivica Olić who crashed a shot off the crossbar before Niko Kranjčar headed the rebound over. Just as against Austria, Croatia lost their way when it looked like they were ready to take a stranglehold on proceedings. Turkey began to enjoy more of the possession and though chances were few, Mehmet Topal drew a gasp from the crowd with a 30-metre drive that whistled just wide.

Rüştü saves
The traffic was soon flowing back towards Rüştü, with Croatia almost given a goal four minutes after the restart. Gökhan Zan’s weak header let Olić in and the veteran goalkeeper had to race off his line to get a finger to the striker’s headed attempt. Rüştü saved from Kranjčar moments later and then, on 70 minutes, Rakitić fired over after a neat one-two with Olić had given him a clear sight of goal inside the box. Knowing their side’s propensity for late goals Turkey supporters grew in confidence as extra time loomed. But as the clocked ticked down Croatia again came close, Rüştü brilliantly tipping away Srna’s curling free-kick on 83 minutes, then blocking from Olić.

Incredible climax
Having taken the match to added time, Turkey started to show more adventure. Stipe Pletikosa did well to parry after Emre Aşık had skipped through the Croatia defence and was then grateful to see Tuncay’s drive flash wide on 102 minutes. In an incredible climax, Klasnić would head Croatia in front in the final minute – Modrić capitalising on an error by Rüştü to provide the assist – only for Semih to hit back with the last kick of the game. His deflected strike flew past Pletikosa, leaving it to a shoot-out to finally tilt the balance in Turkey’s favour.

Turkey coach Fatih Terim claimed, for his side, there is “no limit to success” after they defeated Croatia on penalties to earn a semi-final meeting with Germany. Terim’s men looked to be on the way out when Ivan Klasnić struck in the penultimate minute of extra time, but Semih Şentürk restored parity with the last kick of the game. Turkey then triumphed in the shootout. Croatia coach Slaven Bilić said Turkey have the “X factor” after watching them hit back late on for the third successive match.

Fatih Terim, Turkey coach
I would like to congratulate the Croatia players and coach. They played well but that’s football. You should never give up until the final whistle, that’s what makes football interesting. I congratulate my players, too. Both sides could have won. I think we should be proud and I still haven’t been able to do any damage assessment. Emre Aşık, Tuncay Şanlı and Arda Turan are all suspended [for Germany] because they were booked here, and we have injured players. We have worked very hard over the last two years and deserve to be in this semi-final. If Croatia had won, I would have said they deserved it too, but I’m delighted we did it. I tell my players never to give up. I set them goals and tell them not to be afraid of losing. I think this team could do even better. If only we could have the injured players back, but even without them, we are special. There is something special about this team.

I hope the people enjoy it and I ask them not to make our joy someone else’s tragedy. No win is worth someone’s life, so I ask the Turkish people to enjoy themselves, celebrate and have fun but not to hurt anyone when they do it. To lose a victory in such a short period of time is a serious mental blow for any team – I thought we would have a chance in the shoot-out because of that. If you look at our run, we have always come back and that’s not easy. Let’s hope against Germany we can take the lead. There is no limit to our success. After Croatia scored, I saw players lying on the pitch and I told Arda to get the ball out of the goal and start again. I wasn’t giving up. We could have lost but there were things we could do about it. I always say there is much more we can do as a country of 70 million people and there is more success we can achieve. We seem to come back from the dead. We always do the hard thing, not the easy thing, which shows how good my team are. When you have footballers like this, you just don’t lose.

Slaven Bilić, Croatia coach
This was a good match and I would like to congratulate everyone who took part in it. The game had an incredible ending, the kind you can only find in football. If you sum it up after 120 minutes, we had more opportunities than Turkey. They obviously exerted some pressure on us for a while and were tough opponents but we have beaten better teams so far. We expected them to do all they could to equalise in the last minute or two. Of course, they weren’t bothered about conceding a second as they had to push up to equalise. We received the ball and launched a counterattack which ended in offside.

They didn’t wait for their players to go forward, there were only a couple of them up front, but there was a powerful shot which took a deflection and went in. This is the third match Turkey have won in this extreme manner and if they continue to be lucky and don’t give up, they might even reach the final. It is obvious that they have quality and the X factor which you need in football. Turkey have already shown they’re able to do anything. Having one less rest day than Germany is a handicap and extra time and penalties are also exhausting. They have a number of injured players and suspensions, but some might come back and they won’t give up.

Contrary to the Spanish proverb “the leader follows in front”, Croatia coach Slaven Bilić has very much a style of his own. Pacing the technical area like a watchful security guard he saw his Croatia side reach the brink of the UEFA EURO 2008™ semi-finals – only for comeback kings Turkey to strike again after the most dramatic of finales.

Wenger schooling
At 39, Bilić is almost young enough to be playing at these finals and as he took to his cavernous technical area after kick-off, his eagerness to get close to the action was clear to all at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion. Dressed in familiar grey suit, earring catching the stadium lights, Bilić danced a lonely waltz in Vienna. He followed the ball from one end to the other, dictating the tone and rhythm like an orchestra conductor. An early chance for Hamit Altıntop was waved away with a cursory flick of his hand, Bilić focusing instead on urging Vedran Ćorluka to push on and Luka Modrić to retain his patience. For a man who has frequently spoken about his belief that “systems are dying”, a principle germinated during time shadowing the likes of Marcello Lippi and Arsène Wenger as he started his coaching career, he seemed to have a definite game plan.

Head in hands
For the large part a picture of calm he was in stark contrast to Fatih Terim on the opposite bench, the Turkey coach all emotion, conveying his thoughts through the force of his voice, the power of his arm-waving. Bilić let the guise slip, briefly, readying himself for celebrations as Ivan Rakitić broke, delivering a low cross towards Darijo Srna, a one-time team-mate of his coach’s at HNK Hajduk Split. Hakan Balta intervened to cut short the festivities and Bilić regained his poise, trying to reconnect the supply line to Modrić. The Tottenham Hotspur FC man finally got his chance midway through the first half, weaving into the penalty area and crossing towards Ivica Olić. It sent Bilić bounding towards the touchline, halting his run to put head in hands as the striker’s effort cannoned back off the crossbar.

Animation
Having turned to management almost by accident at hometown club Hajduk seven years ago, Bilić soon started to show the passion that got him hooked in the first place, getting increasingly animated as chance after chance went begging. When Rakitić shot over the bar his coach executed a move that would not have looked out of place on the dancefloor, pirouetting and touching the ground with his hands. The fans responded by chanting his name and while Bilić responded with a meek wave, he was back to his vivacious best at the end of the 90 minutes, dropping to one knee with his players huddled around him, imparting words to see them through extra time. He celebrated with unreserved glee when Ivan Klasnić headed in with one minute remaining, but there was still time for Semih Şentürk to deliver a killer blow – one not even Bilić could recover from.

Croatia rested a host of players yet still proved too strong for Poland as they won 1-0 in Klagenfurt to finish on maximum points in Group B and confirm their opponents’ early exit.

Klasnić winner
Ivan Klasnić scored the winner early in the second half at the Wörthersee Stadion to end another defiant show from goalkeeper Artur Boruc and further boost Croatia’s confidence before they tackle Turkey in the quarter-finals on Friday. Poland’s slim qualifying hopes rested on at least a two-goal victory here and a win for Austria over Germany, and neither came off as Michael Ballack struck the only goal in Vienna.

Duo retained
Poland needed goals so it was something of a surprise that Leo Beenhakker chose to omit Euzebiusz Smolarek, whose marksmanship played a big part in securing qualification to UEFA EURO 2008™ as group winners ahead of Portugal. The coach also left out defender Jacek Bąk who had been hoping to make his 97th appearance. As expected, Slaven Bilić made wholesale changes to the Croatia team with only two players retained from the starting XI who had conjured the famous victory over Germany.

Knežević injury
One of those was left-back Danijel Pranjić and when he made an early forward raid it left a gap which Poland were quick to exploit. Marek Saganowski headed on for Wojciech Łobodziński whose cross brought goalkeeper Vedran Runje out to clear, injuring Dario Knežević in the process. Although the right-back played on after treatment, he was eventually forced off in the 27th minute. By that stage Croatia were taking a firm grip on proceedings and only the brilliance of Boruc kept the score at 0-0. Mladen Petrić played Klasnić in but out came the Poland No1 to make another of those blocks that so frustrated Austria four days ago. From a difficult angle, Ivan Rakitić then found Boruc in the way as he attempted to clip the ball across into the area.

Klasnić goal
After a promising start in which Dariusz Dudka got up well to meet a corner only to place his header wide, Poland were largely on the back foot. On the stroke of half-time Boruc came to the rescue again after Klasnić had skilfully worked an opening. In the 53rd minute Klasnić at last got the better of him. The architect was Pranjić and when he picked out the striker in the penalty area, Klasnić stylishly whipped the ball back across Boruc and into the far corner. Despite the introduction of Smolarek, things remained relatively easy for Croatia’s defence with Dario Šimić, winning his 99th cap, also looking to attack from right-back when the opportunity presented itself.

Poland chances
A smart turn from Roger Guerreiro almost brought Poland back into the contest but he was narrowly wide of the mark. It was a rare moment of hope for the massed ranks of their supporters seated behind the Croatia goal, though another arrived soon after when Marcin Wasilewski’s header forced Runje to stretch. Bilić could afford to give Nikola Kalinić his first run-out at the tournament and only his second cap late on, although Poland did threaten parity when Smolarek fired just wide and substitute Tomasz Zahorski saw a great opening closed by the diving Runje.

It is not often that an international defender confesses to not being very good at defending, and even rarer when his team are through to the last eight at a major tournament, but Croatia left-back Danijel Pranjić knows the one man he needs to impress is already behind him.

Excellent display
“It’s not my usual position because I usually play in midfield,” he says, referring to his club role with Dutch side SC Heerenveen. “My quality is going forward. I’m not really a good defender and sometimes high balls are difficult for me, so I try to attack more.” It is an extraordinary admission, particularly since journalists tried to convince Slaven Bilić of precisely that after Croatia’s uninspiring 1-0 opening victory over Austria, but Bilić ignored their calls and Pranjić repaid his coach’s faith with an excellent display against Germany, setting up Darijo Srna for the first goal in the 2-1 win.

‘More like a colleague’
“Bilić is very important to us,” adds the 22-year-old. “He was a player for a long time and he knows everything about football. He’s a good friend to all the players. After the first game against Austria, there were some critics of my play and he talked to me a lot. He gave me some advice and in the second game I was better.” Bilić has been instrumental in creating the kind of atmosphere where players like Pranjić feel free to speak with honesty, and that seems to be one of the team’s greatest strengths. “He’s part of the family and we want to win the EURO together,” noted the left-sided player. “He’s more like a colleague – there are periods when he’s a coach and periods when he’s a friend, though he hasn’t played guitar for us yet. Maybe before the quarter-finals.”

‘Special feeling’
It is easy from the outside to form an opinion that the Croatians are here to have fun, but Pranjić becomes prickly when asked if celebrations raged all night following the Germany win. “Were you there?” he snaps. “Did you see me? I was in my room by midnight. There was only a little party, nothing special.” Indeed, that result has fed everyone’s desire to go all the way in this tournament. “Germany are a big team, a strong team, so when you win against them it’s a big motivation to go further,” continues the Našice native. “We hope to play our next few games in the same way. It’s a special feeling for any player to be here and maybe you only get to appear in a EURO once in your life. I hope we carry on playing well and get to the final.”

Croatia defender Josip Šimunić paid tribute to his team’s hunger and dedication after their 2-1 victory against Germany in Klagenfurt helped them seal first place in UEFA EURO 2008™ Group B.

‘Outstanding game’
Darijo Srna slid in the opener for Slaven Bilić’s men after 24 minutes and, instead of being forced back as they were against Austria at the weekend, they added a second through Ivica Olić after Ivan Rakitić’s deflected cross had come back off a post. Lukas Podolski then made things interesting again with eleven minutes to go, but Croatia comfortably held on. “We didn’t have the best of games against Austria and we wanted to show that we can play a lot better,” Šimunić told euro2008.com. “We played an outstanding game and every player on the field gave his heart. We deserved to win. In every duel, our players showed we wanted the ball and we showed initiative going forward. We defended very well and every player did his job all over the park.”

Blossoming partnership
One feature of the match was the virtually faultless display by Šimunić and Robert Kovač in the centre of Croatia’s rearguard. Šimunić has only recently cemented his place in the middle after being mostly used as a left-back by his country, but he was immaculate at the Wörthersee Stadion, heading away ball after ball that looked destined for Miroslav Klose. “I’ve actually got a headache,” the Hertha BSC Berlin man joked. “Myself and Robert have a good partnership. We actually had a lot of people criticising us before the tournament, but I think that in the last two games we, and the rest of the team, have shown what we can do. We had a big blow before the tournament, losing Eduardo da Silva, and people were writing us off, but we’re still showing we can come up with good results.”

‘Zagreb is on fire’
The 30-year-old was also quick to praise Croatia’s fans, who provided raucous backing in Klagenfurt and have been swept up in the tournament back home. “I think this will mean a lot [to them],” he said. “A few of my friends have sent me messages saying Zagreb is on fire. They’re celebrating and they have every reason to do so. Our fans are outstanding.” The players themselves are not getting carried away yet, however. “It’s a nice feeling but we still haven’t achieved anything,” added Šimunić. “Our goal before the tournament was to reach the quarter-finals and we’re playing one game at a time. But we’re enjoying it – we’re having fun.”

Just 383 days. That is the age gap between Slaven Bilić and Ivica Vastic, two of Thursday’s prime movers but men pushing at totally opposite extremes in their respective trades. While one is the youngest coach in the competition and potentially the youngest ever to lift the trophy, the other is the tournament’s oldest player – and the man whose last-minute equaliser for Austria cemented top spot in Group B for Bilić and his charges.

Tournament contenders
Thanks to Vastic’s strident spot-kick, Croatia will avoid Portugal in the quarter-finals, a meeting many thought they were not only destined for but destined to lose. No-one will be quite so quick to write them off now, and Bilić’s pre-match comments that “any team that beats Germany can hope to beat anybody” will find real resonance when the tournament contenders are next tallied up. But what do you think? Can the mobility and technique of Luka Modrić, Niko Kranjčar and Ivan Rakitić see them through to the end or will more dynamic teams than Germany expose Robert Kovač and Josip Šimunić’s lack of pace at the back?

The disappointment following the 2-1 loss against Croatia was still etched on the face of Joachim Löw as he addressed the media today. The 48-year-old seemed very tense, perhaps the pressure of expectation weighing on his mind ahead of Germany’s encounter against their neighbours in what is sure to be an emotional night at a sold-out Ernst-Happel-Stadion against co-hosts Austria.

High expectations
After his team struggled to cope with a lively Croatian side in Klagenfurt yesterday, Löw will be asking himself if his players can handle such an all-or-nothing match such as the one which now awaits the Mannschaft. The whole country expects the team to make amends for the loss against Croatia, while the whole of Austria, given hope after the draw with Poland, are hoping for a surprise victory over Löw’s title favourites.

Strong nerves needed
Defender Philipp Lahm expressed his confidence that he and his team-mates are focused enough to see off Asutria and claim the win they need. But is he being overly optimistic? Captain Michael Ballack has not yet been able to reach his usual high standards. The German rearguard looked particularly unstable against Croatia, while in attack, only Lukas Podolski, with three goals in two games so far, seems the only threat. Can the Germans cope with the white-hot atmosphere which is waiting for them in Vienna.

Poland have waited more than 40 years to make it to the finals of the UEFA European Championship but the mood in Leo Beenhakker’s camp now suggests that their campaign is over after only two matches.

Beenhakker bemused
The Biało-czerwoni were shattered by an equalising goal in injury time during Thursday’s Group B meeting with Austria in Vienna and, although they can still qualify for the quarter-finals if they win their final group game against Croatia, coach Beenhakker has effectively conceded that his side are going out.

Boruc depressed
The squad are also in a depressed mood. “We have a small chance now but it’s only a small chance,” said goalkeeper Artur Boruc. “It’s going to be very difficult in the final group game as Croatia have won both of their games and we have to go and play them. It’s a chance, but a very, very small one and it’s hard to raise ourselves after what happened in Vienna.”

Croatia sealed their place in the quarter-finals of UEFA EURO 2008™ as goals from Darijo Srna and Ivica Olić earned a famous win against Germany that took Slaven Bilić’s side three points clear at the top of Group B.

Famous win
With both teams having won their first game on Sunday each knew victory in Klagenfurt would all but secure a ticket to the last eight, and it was Croatia who struck first midway through the first half thanks to the determination of Srna. The points looked safe when Olić tapped in just past the hour, yet Lukas Podolski set up a tense finale with his third goal of the tournament eleven minutes from time. Croatia, whose only previous success against the Mannschaft had come in the quarter-finals of the 1998 FIFA World Cup – a match in which Bilić played – held on with Germany losing Bastian Schweinsteiger to a late red card. Joachim Löw’s men were left needing a point from Monday’s meeting with Austria to continue in the tournament.

Srna strikes
While the Germany coach kept faith with the side that served him well against Poland, Bilić brought in midfielder Ivan Rakitić for Mladen Petrić and pushed Niko Kranjčar into a more advanced role. Neither team were prepared to take risks in a tense opening and the first scoring opportunity did not materialise until the 24th minute – and from it, Croatia took the lead. The ball was worked neatly down the left for Danijel Pranjić to deliver a superb deep cross which Srna, arriving ahead of his marker Marcell Jansen at the far post, steered past Jens Lehmann.

Missed chances
Germany sought an immediate response with Mario Gómez heading over from Jansen’s cross, although Kranjčar might have doubled the Croatian advantage only to volley Olić’s knockdown over the bar. Germany captain Michael Ballack came more into the game, seeking to drive his side forward with half-time approaching and stinging the palms of Stipe Pletikosa with a powerful free-kick, before Christoph Metzelder nodded a Torsten Frings corner too high. Yet it was Croatia who finished the opening period the stronger, with Kranjčar wasting another presentable chance as he volleyed Olić’s pass straight at Lehmann.

Olić opportunism
Löw replaced Jansen with winger David Odonkor at half-time, with Clemens Fritz and Philipp Lahm moving to right and left-back respectively as the coach tried to inject pace into his attack. The ploy did result in Löw’s team gaining more possession but they still found it tough to carve out clear opportunities and fell further behind two minutes past the hour, albeit in unfortunate fashion. Lehmann reacted sharply to push Rakitić’s deflected right-wing centre on to his near post, the ball having struck Podolski, but Olić moved fastest to tap the rebound into an unguarded net.

Podolski pounces
If that goal seemed to be the prelude to a comfortable last half-hour for Croatia, a Germany side who were running out of ideas suddenly halved the deficit with Podolski volleying in Ballack’s knockdown from a Lahm cross. Despite that revival of ambition, the Mannschaft failed to mount a late charge and a disappointing day was completed two minutes into added time when substitute Schweinsteiger was sent off for reacting to a challenge from Jerko Leko.
